Although the smart is small with no glove box there are quite a few storage areas.
Coin Slots
The coin slots are located just in front of the handbrake, they are designed to hold coins commonly used in parking meters, toll booths and supermarket trolleys. Unfortunately the slots were designed for foreign coins and one pound coins will not fit in the slots unless you hammer them in.
Don’t leave money in these slots when you leave the car unattended, it openly invites scumbags to smash your window and help themselves.
Under Seat Drawer
The under seat drawer is an optional extra that can be fitted under the driver’s seat. To open the drawer just twist the knob on the front anticlockwise a quarter of a turn and slide the drawer forwards. To close the drawer just slide it back until you hear a click
Centre Console Add Ons
There are a few accessories that can be attached to the lower section of the centre console that can be used to store items. You can get a:
- CD holder.
- Cassette holder.
- Ashtray.
- Drinks holder.
Each of these additions can be swiveled out to gain access to the storage.
Door Nets And Pockets
On each door you will find either a flexible net or a hard pocket depending on the specification of the car. The nets can move to accommodate larger items but the hard pockets can discreetly accommodate smaller items such as sunglasses.
Under Stereo Drawer
The blank area directly below the stereo is a storage drawer, pull it forward to gain access to it. It’s big enough for quite large items such as MP3 players, glasses and travel sweets.
Boot Space
The most obvious storage space in the smart. The boot is accessed by either holding down the boot release on the key or pressing the boot release button by the drivers knee.
The upper glass section will be released and can be swung upward by hand. The lower section of the boot can be manually lowered by pulling both red tabs located on top of each side of the flap. The lower flap will fold horizontally and can hold up to 100kg but the boot’s maximum load is only 50kg.
The boot can be covered with either a flexible boot cover or the very rare hard cover. It is a good idea to cover anything left in the boot to deter prying eyes.
Boot Storage
On the right hand side of the boot is a small cubby hole with an elastic net on the front.
An addition to the boot is the luggage net bag, it hangs in the boot and is good for storing maps and other flat objects like pizzas, pancakes and of course, toast.
To increase the usability of the boot there is also a boot divider. It fixes to the floor and the roof to seal off the boot from the cabin area. This then allows you to fill the boot all the way to the top and maximising the space.
