This is the Bosch Highline stereo as fitted to many smart fortwo 451s from early 2010 to 2014. I have covered how much of a piece of crap it is on other pages but this will add to that.
Good News Or Bad News First?
Err, let’s go for the good news.
Good News
The good news is that you won’t be wasting your time reading this page for long.
Bad News
When I got my 451 with a Bosch Highline stereo in 2011, the 1st thing I noticed was the maps were immediately out of date. The map file was from 2009 straight from the manufacturer. This set alarm bells ringing. It was immediately obvious that the maps were so rarely updated that these 2009 files were the newest ones.
It gets worse.
At time of writing (February 2022), the newest maps available are from 2014. There will never be an update newer than 2014 and even on release in 2014, it was out of date.
It gets worse.
The price for the maps is in excess of £200.
It gets worse.
If you contact Bosch about map updates, they can’t help you due to a contractural obligation to smart. All they will do is direct you to your nearest smart dealer.
It gets worse.
Have you ever tried ordering something unusual from a smart parts department? I have enquired with several parts departments and none of them were aware of the procedure to order maps. Despite me giving them the correct link to Bosch for their dealership to sign up so they can get maps, they wouldn’t. The closest I got was 1 dealer who said he could get maps no problem but they were for the wrong unit.
All they have to do is go to this link, fill out a form and Bosch will send them the maps for a cost. However, smart don’t want to, don’t know how to or don’t know the codes required.
So, What’s The Plan?
You don’t have many options apart from live with the crappy stereo and out of date maps. Replace the stereo with something decent like a Pioneer AVIC, Alpine etc. Or you can keep plugging away with smart and hope that they work it out.
C’mon, There Must Be Something!
Currently no. I have been looking at hacking the stereo to either add another sat nav program or to find a way to inject the updated maps directly onto the system so it doesn’t require a specially coded update. I have started offering monetary rewards to anyone who can complete specific hacking tasks.
