If your handbrake lifts up too high, it can run out of travel before it properly applies the rear brakes. Thankfully it’s easy to adjust and a better option that the problematic auto-adjusters in the previous models.

With the handbrake raised, look underneath the handle…

…and you’ll see a small cover that can be popped off easily.

You’ll need a long 10mm socket to go over the existing threaded portion and an extension bar in order to reach far enough into the hole.

In a clockwise rotation, tighten the nut half a turn at a time.

Let the handbrake down and lift it back up. You really only need 3 or 4 clicks from the handbrake as you lift it. Keep adjusting the nut until you get the desired height. It’s then a good idea to either jack the rear of the car up, chog the front wheels, let off the handbrake and manually turn the rear wheels to make sure they aren’t binding at all. If you don’t want to lift the car, you can put the car into neutral and make sure it pushes ok.

Go for a drive. Try to use the brakes as little as possible. When you get back, feel the rear drums to make sure they aren’t hot which would indicate that the rear brakes are partially on and creating friction.
