At first, the wiring to the Roadster X-Gauge was different to the For2 version. All of the wiring went straight to the OBD port. This was mainly because that’s how the test X-Gauges were wired and Roland (the X-Gauge creator) didn’t have a Roadster for testing.
There was 2 distinct drawbacks to that wiring setup. Firstly all the settings were lost if the OBD plug was pulled out and secondly the display didn’t dim when the car headlights were turned on. This was because the lighting state info wasn’t available on the OBD port.
Roadster owners like Sacki routed the permanent live wires elsewhere on the Roadster to solve the power problem, but the dimming screen feature was still missing and custom wiring isn’t everyones idea of a good time. Plug and play is much better thesedays.
Plug And Play, The Easy Way
After being given a chance to check a Roadsters wiring I noticed something interesting, It is exactly the same as the Smart Fortwo. Same PCB, same wiring, just a different fascia.
As you can see, circled in red is the clock pod power connection that is used on the For2, this is where the X-Gauge is plugged in to receive the power and light dimming signal.
No amount of thinking will prove it works so I plugged the Roadster buttons into the Smart Fortwo. I then plugged the X-Gauge into the clock edge connection and turned the car on.
So there you have it, the smart For2 version plugs straight into the roadster with no messy or complicated wiring, all you need to do is house the X-Gauge PCB.
Fortwo X-Gauge Pod In A Roadster
Several people have fitted the X-Gauge to the roadster using a Fortwo pod. These pictures are of Cambell‘s Roadster installation.
