Welcome to the site known worldwide as evilution.

The site dedicated to almost everything about smart cars.

You’re a YouTuber Harry

If I wasn’t already spread thin, I’m making my life harder by doing YouTube videos as well. I’m recording a video each Saturday and Sunday and I’ll release 1 every 2 or 3 weeks. That’ll give me a bit of a video buffer in case I can’t record for some reasons.

Please have a watch and please subscribe to the channel. The longer you watch, the better. evilution on Youtube.

The videos will be posted initially on Patreon, then here, then public on YouTube. If you can support me on Patreon, that’d be great.

OK, onto the usual pages.

Things are getting a bit better

One of the few things that gets to me is accounting. Just the thought of doing the accounts makes me feel depressed and I generally transcend the situation by ignoring them. Obviously that just makes it worse and worse. I finally understood what to do and how they work so I’m up to date and planning to do them weekly so I don’t forget how to do them and I remember what I bought and received.

We are still having issues with PayPal not sending the renewals through on some account. Read the previous news for more information, especially if you received an email saying your membership has been cancelled. If you know you have paid recently, let me know and I’ll sort it out manually.

I’m now part time at work so I have more time to play with cars. This weekend I have also recorded my 1st real video. It’s about a 453 EQ that I’m fixing. I have generally kept away from being on video as I don’t like my voice and I have verbal communication issues. If I think of what I’m going to say, I’ll forget certain words and get things mixed up but I found that if I just go with the flow and just say what I’m thinking, it generally makes sense and comes across as understandable. I generally talk to myself and talk myself through things anyway. Having just edited day 1 into a 30 minute video, I’m amazed how much I quietly mutter swear words. Hopefully I’ll get into the swing of making videos but don’t expect them to be cinematic masterpieces.

The idea is that, although some people like to fix their car, many more people just like to watch other people fix their cars on YouTube. So I have made a Patreon account and added my 1st video. I have some videos in hand so I’ll start adding them over time. I have so many project ideas but only have the space to do 1 at a time.

OK, the new stuff.

Issues with recurring payments – please read

Due to a bug between a plug-in that we use and PayPal, we are seeing many recurring payments not being sent. The only option we have is to reset the account membership level back to “unpaid” and cancel the recurring payment through PayPal and hope that people resubscribe. We are doing this because there’s no way to receive that money and maintain the automatic renewal. We also don’t want PayPal to sort their shit out and suddenly send out payments after we have adjusted the membership level.

Another issue we are having is that PayPal sometimes won’t send out payment or cancellation codes so we are having to stay on the ball and manually check all of the accounts.

The 3rd issue we had was through card payments. We use a company called Stripe who have been great but after a few issues with Indian scammers trying to “card check” stolen card details, Stripe insisted that we add a CAPTCHA to the site. We did that and it broke everything and they don’t know why. So we aren’t receiving payment or cancellation codes from them either and we had to remove the card payment option until the issue can be rectified.

OK, on to the mods.

Things going less wrong than before but still wrong

Update from the last news because I know that everyone reads this (lol).

I had 2 MOT’s in 1 day. Double squeaky bum hole time. The 453 EQ mentioned in the last news was one of them and they both passed with no issues. Even with the radar warning. Sweet.

The 451 ED that had a catastrophic high voltage failure late last year, you’ll see from the upcoming guides that I removed the HV battery, opened it up, replaced the mega fuse and checked everything over before temporarily refitting it. This did not fit the fault and I was set to start dismantling it for parts. That’s when I was told to check the inverter. I did, it has shit itself. Replacements were £4800 from smart. Errr no. Thankfully I was offered a 2nd hand one for only €900 delivered. Hopefully it’ll fix it when it arrives.

I had a 451 key stop working. I tried everything and eventually decided to recode it. Bought a key coding box and that must have scared the key because it suddenly started working again. Handy but annoying.

Then there was a site issue. The card payment thingy stopped working so we removed it until a fix is found. Then we discovered that PayPal weren’t sending out automatic renewal payments because a bug with the PMPro plugin. My tamed coder is dealing with real life issues so I had a go myself (a phrase that never ends well). I had to manually adjust the account of 338 accounts taking about 14 hours. Then I found out that PayPal also weren’t sending out payment codes so some of the non paid accounts that I just adjusted actually had paid and then I had to readjust several accounts back again. I’ll just say this now. Every time your evilution account email address and PayPal email address is different, God kills a puppy because pairing accounts with PayPal addresses takes 3 times as long and that makes me sad.

When nothing seems to go right

It has been one of those months where things don’t go the way you want. It all takes too long and I quickly lose interest. I wasted an entire weekend chasing fast flashing indicators in the 453 EQ fortwo. The front indicators wouldn’t work which eventually turned out to be the bumper wiring loom. Fitted a replacement loom that didn’t have fog light wiring, all of the indicators worked but they still fast flashed. Eventually I disconnected the battery for a few hours and it started working. The problem the next week was the MOT.

I drove to the wheel alignment place on the way to the MOT, that turned out fine. Got to the MOT place and was immediately told that it would fail because I’d removed the front fog lights but the age of the car and the stalk having the front fog switch = fail.

So, I drove home, swapped cars and went to my local smart main dealer. Parts department was closed for stock take. Turds. Went home and started looking at making a wiring loom. That’s when I got a frontal radar fault that couldn’t be deleted. Xentry said it wasn’t facing exactly the right direction but no adjustment changed any of the figures. I’m not sure it’d pass an MOT with radar braking faults showing on the speedo. So I don’t know what to do with that at the moment.

Anyway, this is what I have completed as well as messing about with this EQ.
